It now appears that Systemic Acquired Resistance is one component of plants’ integrated disease-resistance repertoire. SAR appears to be distinct from other disease resistance mechanisms such as physical barriers or protein cross-linking. Furthermore SARS is not induced by wounding or osmotic stress.

Systemic Acquired Resistance often appears to be triggered by certain fungi such as these milky caps, which extrude enzymes which break down chitin. Insect pathogens have chitin in their exoskeleton, making it the second most abundant polysaccharide in nature (after cellulose).
