Healthy Soil for Healthy Plants

One of the surprises in regenerative agriculture is that healthier soil improves the immune system of plants. It has been discovered that like animals, plant have the ability to acquire disease resistance in a system manner. Among academics, long-lasting, broad-spectrum, Systemic Acquired Resistance to subsequent infections has come to be known as SAR. In prior periods and in other circles, it has been known by other names …. Such physiological acquired immunity or induced resistance.

It now appears that Systemic Acquired Resistance is one component of plants’ integrated disease-resistance repertoire.  SAR appears to be distinct from other disease resistance mechanisms such as physical barriers or protein cross-linking. Furthermore SARS is not induced by wounding or osmotic stress.
Systemic Acquired Resistance has been studied in many plant species and the spectrum of resistance noted includes not only viruses and bacteria, but also some fungi.  Follow this link to an article from Plant Physiology, Update on Plant-Microbe Interactions: Systemic Acquired Resistance.
Systemic Acquired Resistance often appears to be triggered by certain fungi such as these milky caps, which extrude enzymes which break down chitin.  Insect pathogens have chitin in their exoskeleton, making it the second most abundant polysaccharide in nature (after cellulose).
These milky caps were discovered this morning in a sample bucket of SymSoil’s first production run of biologically active compost.   Contact us for information information about our biologically active compost or an assessment of the health of your soil. info Email

About SymSoil

SymSoil Inc., a Benefit Corporation (B), is a leader in development of biological soil amendments for agriculture that restores the microbes that provide the right food to the plant roots, improving plant health, and making food more tasty and nutrient dense, the way nature intended.  These indigenous crop and regional soil specific microbes regenerate the soil significantly increasing crop yields and nutrient density in food.
